Let’s face it water beds at one time were cool, the idea of sliding onto a moving bed of water made the idea of going to bed a lot more inviting for kids.
The idea of the waterbed had been around for a while dating back as far as the early 1800’s but it wasn’t until 1968 that Charles Hall invented the first mainstream bed that we all know and love; but not before many design problems associated with it; such as springing a leak.
By 1970’s that things really took off; and became a symbol of the sexual revolution of the era. Such catchphrases such as “Two things are better on a waterbed. One of them is sleep.” and “She’ll admire you for your car, she’ll respect you for your position, but she’ll love you for your waterbed.”The idea of selling sex to sell beds worked like a charm. By 1986 20% of people had a waterbed, but the success of the bed was not to last for long.
Once bed technology improved with such beds as the Tempur-Pedic mattress, the idea of owning a cumbersome waterbed became lame. What was once considered cool was now a bad idea even if it quite possibly still the best sleep a person can get. Maybe it’s time for a comeback, what do you think?
